About the Dunollie Hotel

The original Dunollie Hotel was a two-storey building, the construction of which was completed around January 1905. It had a bit of a fight to get a liquor license, with many claiming it would corrupt the moral character of the miners.  It was sadly destroyed in a fire on the 9th of March, 1928. An attempt was made to relocate the license to a proposed new hotel in adjacent Runanga, but it was defeatd by a concerted effort by local church groups. The present Dunollie Hotel was built not long after.

You can see photos of the original hotel below, from close to it's original construction to not long before it burned down. The balcony was a later addition at an unknown date. We have more historic photos of the area at the Hotel.

About Dunollie

Dunollie is a former mining settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island that traces it's history to 1903. It was established primarily to support the nearby mine. This old newspaper article from December 1903 calls for investors in the new town. Click here to view the original proposed town plan. During the heydey of mining it was quite active in spite of it's small size. Things are considerably quieter these days, making it the perfect place for those who want to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet.
